After a close match, the AU women’s team fell one try short against GW last Saturday with a final score of 12-17. The A Side started seven Rookies to give them a chance to get some play time, while several returners were set aside to take a break. An early GW injury –only 10 minutes into the match– paused the game for nearly 20 minutes and the AU team seemed to have lost a bit of focus; soon after the game resumed, GW scored their first try. Throughout the game some switches were made, but ultimately, it was the Rookies who got to play their game and show off what they could do.
Some inspiration from head coach, Roly Pratt:
“We started six rookies on our team plus Mac 2 who has not gotten to play much. Today was a great opportunity for them to show the coaches what they could do. It was very pleasing indeed to see so many new girls make great plays. You played against the no. 3 ranked team in the PRU and came up just short. In the B side we had three more rookies play the full 40 and you crushed them.
Our defense in the second half had some good moments, but we still have a lot of work to do in order for it to be a strength. This takes time but it will come. Today we were a little slow into the rucks at times, and cost us some opportunities to turn over ball. Remember, rucking will win us the league.
Next week the no. 1 team comes to town plus it’s parents week. If you can’t get up for that, then you might have a problem.
This week, we re-group, re-focus and bring the intensity that we had the week we played CUA. We have three weeks left. Mary’s, quarters and finals weekend. That’s it. Lets make this next month the greatest in the history of AUWRFC. Work hard and believe in yourselves, and we can do it.”
Women of the Match: Timmy and Veggie get the award. Both stepped up and led from the front giving go forward ball all day. Of course it’s really hard not to mention our two try rookie Abbie who played great and she gets the most honorable of mentions.
