This weekend’s match was a tough, hard-fought win against UMD at their home field. A focus point of last week’s practices was defense: spreading the line out wide, getting people into touch, and overall communication. We certainly improved on this front and it showed clearly in Saturday’s game. Stronger defense paired with more efficient offensive play contributed to our success this weekend.
Woman of the match this game goes to one of our spring rookies, Nicole, who played impressive rugby both offensively and defensively in only her second game ever. She scored two tries and took what she learned at practice the previous week to force a number of UMD players on breakaways into touch, saving a number of tries for our team.
Coming up next weekend is the Washington RFC’s annual Cherry Blossom Tournament. After this week’s 80 minutes of hard work and determination (followed by an equally exhausting 30 minute B-side), we’re ready to spend the whole weekend playing strong, effective AU rugby.
